A low cost alternative approach to the traditional wood trim applications
The basic idea is to create a sandwich of either a solid or a
transparent material between a plastic substrate and an acrylic
overmold. Using highly polished tools developed to create automotive
headlight and tail lamp lenses from scratch and impact resistant
plastics, this technique was applied to create a “real wood”
interior trim product using a veneer in acrylic as opposed to
wood under multiple coats of lacquer.
We believe there is tremendous potential for this technology,
and we have tooling to run sample parts here in Michigan. Collins
& Aikman would be amenable to selling or licensing this technology
on an exclusive basis within certain non-automotive product categories.
Among the many applications we see for this technology are uses
in the consumer electronics/communications marketplace. Rather
than make cell phone, laptop, and MP3 cases from colored or painted
(which has not worked well for Dell) plastics, this technique
enables a variety of materials to be used as a middle layer. Our
samples include the use of wood veneers, fabrics, carbon fiber,
colored paper, thin films, graphics, logos and much more. Additionally,
because the mold for the part remains constant, many intermediate
layers can be used with no additional tooling cost. Producers
can make small, highly customized runs of production. You can
imagine quite easily that cell phone service providers could develop
more distinctive cases for phones, that laptop cases could have
company or university specific identification marks embedded in
the casework, or individuals could send images or designs to be
molded into their product casing.

vehicles, tractors and other agricultural vehicles and trailers.
